What is psychic conflict?

Psychic conflict refers to a “mental struggle” that occurs when a person experiences opposing desires, motives, emotions, or internalized values. It’s a term most often used in psychoanalytic theory, especially in Freudian and psychodynamic contexts

A classic Freudian example of psychic conflict is “primitive desires form the id clash with moral constraints from the superego, leaving the ego to mediate. (Id versus Superego)

Second psychic conflict example is desires or fears outside of awareness (unconscious mind) can influence thoughts and behaviours (conscious mind), this creating internal tension. (Conscious versus Unconscious)

Third psychic conflict example is a person is drawn to and repelled by the same goal (e.g., wanting intimacy but fearing vulnerability) (Approach-Avoidance conflict)

Fourth psychic conflict example is conflicting internal roles or schemas (e.g., wanting to be independent but also deeply needing connection) (Intra-role conflict)

Fifth psychic conflict is ambivalence (love and hate toward the same person)

Sixth psychic conflict is Values-based dissonance (e.g., wanting to be independent but fearing abandonment)
