What is psychic conflict?

Core Concept (Freudian View):

In Freud’s structural model of the mind:

•Id: primitive drives and instincts (pleasure, aggression, sexuality)

•Superego: internalized moral standards, guilt, and societal rules

•Ego: the mediator between the id, superego, and reality

Psychic conflict arises when:

•The id demands immediate gratification

•The superego imposes guilt or shame

•And the ego tries to manage both within the constraints of reality

Example:

A person feels a strong sexual attraction (id) to someone, but their values (superego) and social context make acting on that attraction unacceptable. The ego experiences anxiety and must find a way to cope---either by repressing the desire, sublimating it, or experiencing symptoms like guilt or obsession.
